Afro-Americans in New York Life and History is an interdisciplinary journal that is published two times per year (January and July) by the Afro-American Historical Association of the Niagara Frontier, Inc. The journal began publication in 1977. Through the journal, the Association will endeavor to encourage and publish research and scholarship pertaining to Afro-Americans in New York State . The journal will publish analytical, historical, and descriptive articles dealing with the life and history of Afro-Americans in New York State . We will also publish articles on race relations and racial attitudes. In addition, the journal will carry articles dealing with methodology and trends in local and regional Afro-American studies. Moreover, we will attempt to aid the researcher by identifying and publicizing information concerning the location of archival sources and research materials pertaining to Afro-Americans in New York.

The journal will publish book reviews pertaining to the life and history of people of African descent in the United States or elsewhere.



Persons who wish to submit articles for consider for publication should observe the following:


(1). Afro-Americans in New York Life and History welcomes the submission of original research examining all aspects of Black life in New York for upcoming issues of the journal. We seek to engage a variety of issues addressed by scholars, public historians, educators, independent researchers and other established practitioners in the field.


(2). Submissions should be original research at the length of 7,000 words or less, not counting notes, tables, or charts. The citation style used by the AANYLH generally follows the conventions recommended by the Chicago Manual Style, 16th Edition. The text should be double-spaced. Citations should be numbered consecutively and should appear as footnotes. Please include your full addresses, including e-mail in all correspondence.


(3). The editors prefer that manuscripts be submitted in an e-mail as a Microsoft Word attachment or in Rich Text Format (RTF) or with “MS Submission” in the subject line. No manuscript will be considered for publication if it is currently under consideration by another journal or if it has been published elsewhere.


(4). Submitted essays are submitted to a double-blind peer-review process. The text of your essay should not include your name or institutional affiliation.
